Part 1: Modding Your Wii

  1. Ensure your Wii is on version 4.3. You can do this by going into Settings, then to Wii Settings. It says your version on that screen. Make note of this.
  2. Now go to Page 2 then select Internet.
    Instructional Picture 1
  3. Then, go to Console Information.
  4. Make note of your MAC Address then go to please.hackmii.com. Now put both your version and your MAC Address in the fields, make sure "Bundle the HackMii Installer for me" is ticked, do the Captcha, then click either "Cut the red wire" or "Cut the blue wire". The button that you click doesn't matter.
  5. Unzip the files then put them on an SD Card.
  6. Put the SD Card in your Wii then go to yesterday's date on the Wii Message Board. You should see a red letter with a bomb in it (which matches the one on the website that you just used) so click on it.
  7. You should see this screen.
    Instructional Picture 2
  8. Then you will see this screen. Wait a few seconds for the screen to say "Press 1 to Continue".
    Instructional Picture 3
  9. Now select "Install The Homebrew Channel".
    Instructional Picture 4
  10. It will ask you if you want to install the Homebrew Channel. Select "Yes, continue".
    Instructional Picture 5
  11. When it's done it should say "Success". So select "Continue".
    Instructional Picture 6
  12. Now select "BootMii".
    Instructional Picture 7
  13. You will see at least one option to install BootMii, "Install BootMii as IOS". If there's an option saying "Install BootMii as Boot2", select that.
  14. Instructional Picture 12

    Else, select BootMii as IOS.
    Instructional Picture 8
  15. It will ask you to insert an SD Card. Select "Yes, continue".
    Instructional Picture 9
  16. It will ask you if you want to install BootMii. Select "Yes, continue".
    Instructional Picture 10
  17. When it's done it should say "Success". So select "Continue".
    Instructional Picture 11
  18. Select "Exit".
    Instructional Picture 13
  19. Now you should be at the Homebrew Channel.
    Instructional Picture 14
  20. Press the HOME Button then select "Launch BootMii".
    Instructional Picture 15
  21. This is BootMii, a very useful tool that's useful for doing things like doing a NAND Backup, which we will do now. This menu will appear every time you boot your Wii if you installed BootMii as Boot2, so you can either select the Wii Menu or the Homebrew Channel to exit. The NAND Backup is very much recommended since you can restore this to your Wii if anything goes wrong. Please make sure you have at least 512 MB free on your SD Card since that's how much space this NAND Backup takes. You will notice that your Wii Remote won't be able to navigate through the menu using your Wii Remote. Don't worry, you use these controls.
    Instructional Picture 24
  22. You use the buttons on your Wii to navigate through this menu or a GameCube Controller or Family Trainer Pad (they must be plugged in to port 1) to navigate through this menu.
    Instructional Picture 16
  23. Navigate to the option with the gears on it then select it.
    Instructional Picture 17
  24. Select the option in the next menu with a chip pointing to an SD Card with a green arrow.
    Instructional Picture 18
  25. If you see this message then you probably don't have your SD Card inserted so please insert it.
    Instructional Picture 19
  26. The NAND Backup will start. Please don't turn off your Wii while this runs.
    Instructional Picture 20
  27. If you see anything like this which says that there's a "factory bad block", don't worry. Think of a bad block in the NAND as a bad pixel on a TV. Since it would be too expensive to replace the whole screen just for a bad pixel, it's left that way. It's the same thing for your Wii NAND.
    Instructional Picture 25
  28. You can skip verifying your NAND Backup when it's done if you. Just in case, I would leave it on while it verifies. When it's done then you can press any button to exit the NAND Backup menu.
    Instructional Picture 21
  29. You should be back on the menu you were on earlier. To exit this menu, select the option with an arrow. Now you will be on the main menu again.
    Instructional Picture 22
  30. Now select the Homebrew Channel and you can proceed with the next steps. Now is the best time to put your nand.bin and keys.bin BootMii outputted on your SD Card in a safe place.
